Feedback

We have worked closely with the local community as we have evolved our designs for Devonshire Gardens. This has included our digital consultation - with the associated Give My View website for feedback to be left – as well as webinars and meetings with stakeholders.

We continue to welcome feedback via info@devonshiregardenscambridge.com
To date:

  • The Devonshire Gardens website received over 800 visits.
  • Adverts for the consultation were viewed by over 200,000 people online.
  • Over 12,000 leaflets about the consultation were distributed across both phases to advertise the consultation.
  • 6,900 visits were made to the feedback platform.
  • Over 40 meetings took place with key stakeholders.
  • Five virtual briefings were offered to members of the public.

Our response
87% of people voted neutral to positive about the landscape design for the public park, and 53% of people concluded that designs should prioritise greening.
Our proposals for a public park include ‘edible planting’, opportunities for ‘community gardening’, promoting healthy, sociable and sustainable lifestyles.

These spaces could help educate younger people about issues such as healthy sustainable food and support local charitable initiatives.

A commitment to delivering green, biosolar roofs on some of the buildings, to help nature thrive.

Planting of new mature and semi-mature trees will be planted on the site, incorporating fruit trees and other edible plants. We are also talking to the Cambridge Canopy Project regarding this.
50% of people support flora and nesting for bees as an approach to re-wilding and supporting nature.
We propose a substantial net increase in biodiversity, supporting flora and fauna and enhancing health and wellbeing.

We are encouraging biodiversity on the site, encouraging this to happen through additional plants, trees, bird boxes, bat boxes, hedgehog habitats and bug hotels.

Discussions with Cambridge Sustainable Food about how the site can support and teach young people as well as supporting charitable initiatives.
Design should be influenced by the history and architecture of the street.
We are ensuring the design is appropriate and responsive to the surrounding architectural landscape. For instance, we have taken key architectural cues from the surroundings and the industrial aesthetic of the railway.
There is a need for space for local organisations, and spaces for community work and events.
There will be spaces available within the office buildings for the community to rent and use for meetings and events, from yoga to local residents associations. We hope to offer these at a reduced rent to community and charitable organisations.

Providing a community kitchen, a ‘library of things’ and a space to create and exhibit art.

We are talking to the Mill Road Winter Fair about using outdoor and indoor community space as part of winter fair celebrations.

Working on a Public Art strategy to celebrate local creativity and provide opportunities for local designers to influence the design and curation for the public realm.

Liaising with local organisations on the potential for community uses and activation.
This is an opportunity to complement the vibrant, independent retail environment of Mill Road, not compete with it.
We are working closely with local traders and independent businesses to ensure a shared vision for the site with a variety of opportunities for existing local businesses and organisations to embrace.

Our proposals will generate new footfall on Mill Road and remove disruptive HGV traffic, supporting existing local businesses.
Local people would like to see a large portion of the site dedicated to independent cafés and shops.
The introduction of space for local independent businesses, leisure and community uses set around the new public park will form an active public realm, contributing to the area and establishing it as a key addition to the existing community.

We understand that the local community want to see local independent businesses, and we will be working hard to attract these to support the character of the area.
There should be better pedestrian routes to open up the site.
The Proposal prioritises pedestrians, creating additional and accessible space for local people walk, exercise, relax and socialise.

The inclusion of wider, more spacious paving, separation from cars and cyclists, and improved natural ‘eyes on the street’, for a safer experience.
There is anti-social behaviour on Mill Road and this could affect the safety of those using Devonshire Gardens.
Homes across the site will remain under the long-term ownership of Railpen as a professional landlord, with comprehensive maintenance, security and upkeep of all buildings.

The Applicant will be engaging with the council, police and other local stakeholders on community safety issues to ensure appropriate design prevention strategies are in place.
People were keen to see separate cycle lanes and secure storage for cyclists.
Encouraging cycling as the primary form of travel for the scheme. The overall provision for cyclists will include Sheffield cycle stands, secure bike storage, integrated cycle lanes, charging facilities for e-bikes and parking for cargo bikes.
Reduce impact of height.
Height has now been reduced from a maximum of six storeys at the tallest point, to a maximum of just five stories. The tallest element of our proposals remain next to the railway line, furthest away from Devonshire Road.
